The TPCK model

Technology:  The tool itself is based in technology.  iBooks takes a regular book and infuses technology to your everyday book.
Pedagogy:  At its core iBooks is still a traditional textbook but it allows for more 21st Century content to expand comprehension and interactivity.
Content:  iBooks do not change the content of the textbook but instead allows you to enhance the learning experience.

Knowledge:  The additional elements that can be added through iBooks and iAuthor enhance the experience and the information that can be retained from the instruction.

Teaching case#2

In this case the students will choose a topic and create a chapter for an online textbook using iBooks Author.  This will allow the students to create an information source that is up to date as well as one that can be updated at any time.  The students will select what information they want to include as well as the methods in which this information is presented.  They will have the option of including their information through a variety of medias.  The students will be able to include text, audio, video, links to websites, and 3D models in their chapters.  Once the students have completed their chapters they will present them to the class.  These chapters can be used along with the current textbooks to enhance student learning and hopefully get students more excited about, and more involved with, the learning process.  These chapters can also be saved and used for future learning in future classes.

Teaching case #1

The students will find a textbook that is offered through iBooks for the given subject.  The students will then begin to “update” the textbook by revising the given content and adding their own content.  They can add text, audio, video, links to websites, and 3D models to the textbook.  After the students have “updated” their textbooks they will present them to the class.  The “updated” textbooks can be used along with the current textbooks to enhance student learning and hopefully get students more excited about and more involved with the learning process.  These “updated” textbooks can also be saved and used for future learning in future classes.

I have not used iBooks before.  However, after exploring iBooks I have had some ideas as to how it can help in the classroom.  I think it would be extremely helpful if students created their own “textbook” using iBooks.  They could add their own current information; pictures, text, audio, and even video to help them and their classmates learn the concepts.

iBooks is still a new tool so I don't have too much experience with it, at least not in the classroom.  I recently was able to use this tool with my daughter to help her learn about ants.  The title, “Life on earth” helped her to understand how ants live and what they look like, we were able to observe and interact with ants without actually having to touch them! 

Teaching scenario

A way that this tool could support learning is that it could be used to help encourage students into reading the materials. By embedding video into the book students would be able to break up their reading and promote greater understanding of the materials.  iBooks can be used for a variety of different activities that can be designed with applying this technology.  iBooks fit the TPCK model perfectly.  This technology merges with the content and pedagogy extremely well.  

Introduction

iBooks is a new standard in eBooks that can be used in any educational

environment.  iBooks allow you to create and subscribe to books on your computer, iPad, iPod, etc.  iBooks is a great tool for the classroom because it allows the educator and the students to create their own textbooks that can be updated and cover any topic.  The creator can use this tool to create a book; they can embed interactive pictures, videos and 3D models.  Using iBooks is pretty straight forward but like any new technology one simply needs to play around with the software.  This tool allows students of all different abilities and learning styles to be successful in the classroom.
